Dynamo LED Displays supplied the LED dance floor for Shygirl’s thicc music video: a walk-on LED floor built from rental LED cabinets on a floor frame, playing patterned video under Shygirl and her dancers. Filmed mostly from above, the floor doubled as the set and the main light source in the shot.

The brief: a floor that becomes the set
The video needed a surface Shygirl and a group of dancers could perform on that changed with the track and read well from a camera looking straight down. A projected floor washes out under studio light and a painted floor cannot move. An LED floor does both jobs: it is the stage and it is the picture, and because it emits light it also lights the performers from below.

A walk-on LED floor on a frame
The floor went in the same way as our other LED floor hire jobs: cabinets laid onto a floor frame and locked together, the processor and media player connected, and the video file loaded. Once it is running there is nothing for the crew to manage beyond the content, so the choreography, not the kit, sets the pace of the day.

Most of the finished video looks down at the floor, so the content was built as radial and kaleidoscopic patterns that hold their shape from directly overhead, in pinks and reds that match the grade of the film. The dancers move across the pattern rather than in front of it, which is the effect a wall-mounted screen cannot give.
Light, colour and skin tones
Because the LED floor is the brightest thing in the room, it becomes the key light in the top-down shots and a back light in the low-angle ones. The camera team set the floor brightness and the pattern colours together, so faces stayed readable against the pink content while the low shots could go fully to silhouette.

The walk-on floor Dynamo hires and sells today is the DIT Series. The figures below are from the DIT Series datasheet. Every DIT cabinet is 500 × 500 mm, rated for more than 2,000 kg per square metre and sealed to IP65 front and rear, so it copes with a full dance floor and spilt drinks alike.

What is an LED dance floor?
An LED dance floor is a video display built from walk-on LED cabinets laid on a frame, so the surface people dance on plays full-motion content. Unlike a lit-up disco floor with fixed coloured tiles, it shows any video or pattern you load, and the same tiles can be laid as a stage or a catwalk. The floor in the Shygirl video was built this way from Dynamo rental cabinets.
How much weight can an LED dance floor take?
Dynamo’s DIT Series floor cabinets are rated on the datasheet for a load of more than 2,000 kg per square metre, which covers a crowded dance floor, performers and staging. The thing to watch is point loads: furniture with narrow metal legs or a heavy prop on a small foot should sit on a spreader plate so the load is shared across the tile surface.
Can an LED dance floor react to the dancers?
Yes. The DIT Series is available with built-in multi-touch sensing, so footsteps trigger animations, ripples or a game, as they did on the Costa Coffee touchscreen floor Dynamo built in London. The Shygirl floor ran pre-made video instead, which is the simpler option when the choreography is fixed and the director wants exact control of every frame.
Which pixel pitch suits an LED dance floor that will be filmed?
For a camera looking straight down from a few metres, 2.6mm keeps the LED structure invisible and the patterns sharp; the Trapstar floor Dynamo built at Selfridges used a 2.5mm tile for the same reason. For a large club or event floor seen from further back, 3.9mm or 5.2mm keeps the tile count and cost down and adds brightness for a lit venue.
How is an LED dance floor installed for a video shoot?
The crew lays a floor frame, locks the 500 × 500 mm cabinets onto it, trims the edge with a ramp where people step on, and connects the processor and a media player. One video file then runs across the whole surface. Dynamo builds, tests and de-rigs the floor, and on a shoot day the build is usually done before the performers arrive.
