LED Floor Hire For Trapstar At Selfridges

LED floor hire for Trapstar at Selfridges: Dynamo supplied and installed a 3 m by 2.5 m walk-on LED floor, thirty 500 mm by 500 mm tiles at 2.5mm pixel pitch, in under three hours for the in-store signing of Dave’s album We’re All Alone in This Together, playing custom content matched to the album artwork.

Looking for LED floor hire?

Dynamo provided the LED floor hired by Trapstar for the album signing and launch of Dave’s We’re All Alone in This Together at Selfridges on Oxford Street. The brief was a stage the artist and the merchandise could stand on, that carried the album artwork under everyone’s feet, and that could go in and come out around store hours.

We hold walk-on LED floor in the hire fleet for exactly this kind of one-day retail activation, alongside an interactive LED floor with built-in sensors that reacts to footsteps. Our wider LED screen hire range covers the walls, backdrops and processing that usually go with it.

The brand and the artist

Trapstar is the West London streetwear label founded by Mikey Trapstar and worn by artists including Rihanna, Stormzy and A$AP Rocky; it went on to sign with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. Dave, also known as Santan Dave, had already taken Funky Friday with Fredo to number one in the UK charts and Location with Burna Boy to number six. The Selfridges signing brought the two together for the album launch, with fans queuing through the store for signed Trapstar merchandise.

The installation

Three hours from van to first content

This was Dynamo’s second job at Selfridges after installing LED tickers for Paco Rabanne in the Oxford Street window, on the indoor concourse and at the Birmingham and Manchester stores. The floor went in within three hours: tiles laid and locked on the store floor, the edge trimmed, the processor and media player connected and the content checked before Dave arrived to sign.

Content matched to the album

The floor was driven by a media player set to loop custom content designed on the same theme as the album cover, the pink and purple seascape visible in the photograph above. The clothing rail and the merchandise stand sat directly on the tiles, which is the point of a walk-on floor: the display is the stage rather than something people have to keep off.

The tech

The floor at Selfridges

The stage was a 6 by 5 array of 500 mm by 500 mm LED floor tiles, thirty tiles giving 3 m by 2.5 m of active surface at 2.5mm pixel pitch, fine enough to show sharp artwork to people standing on it and looking down. A single media player fed the processor, so one file ran the whole surface.

Current Dynamo LED floor specification

The walk-on floor Dynamo hires and sells today is the DIT Series. The figures below are from the DIT Series datasheet.

Specification DIT 2.6 DIT 3.9
Pixel pitch 2.6mm 3.9mm
Tile size 500 × 500 × 92 mm 500 × 500 × 85 mm
Tile resolution 192 × 192 px 128 × 128 px
Brightness 800 nits or more 2,600 nits or more
Load capacity Over 2,000 kg/m² Over 2,000 kg/m²
Protection IP65 IP65
Weight 15 kg per tile 13 kg per tile
Interaction Multi-touch sensing Multi-touch sensing

A 6 by 5 array of DIT 2.6 tiles, the same footprint as the Selfridges stage, would give 1152 × 960 pixels. For a larger stage or a dance floor see the Shygirl LED dance floor; for a reactive floor see the Costa Coffee touchscreen floor pop-up.

LED floor hire: frequently asked questions

What is LED floor hire?

LED floor hire is the short-term rental of walk-on LED tiles that lock together into a video surface people can stand, walk or dance on. Dynamo delivers the tiles, lays and locks them, connects a processor and media player, and removes everything afterwards. It suits product launches, signings, pop-ups, fashion shows and dance floors where the content has to be underfoot.

How big was the LED floor at Selfridges?

The Selfridges stage was thirty tiles laid six wide by five deep. Each tile is 500 mm square, so the active surface was 3 m by 2.5 m, or 7.5 square metres, at 2.5mm pixel pitch. That was large enough for the artist, a clothing rail and a merchandise stand to sit on the floor together.

How long does an LED floor take to install?

The Selfridges floor was installed within three hours, from the tiles arriving in store to content playing. Time depends on the tile count, whether the floor needs an edge ramp, and how far the equipment has to travel from the loading bay. Dynamo plans the build around store or venue hours so the floor is live before doors open.

Can people walk on an LED floor?

Yes. The DIT Series datasheet rates the tiles at a load of over 2,000 kg per square metre, with an IP65 front that resists spills and cleaning. The Selfridges floor carried the artist, staff, a loaded clothing rail and a merchandise stand throughout the signing. Furniture with narrow legs should sit on a spreader plate to avoid point loads.

Can an LED floor be interactive?

Yes. Dynamo’s DIT Series floor has multi-touch sensing built into the tiles, so the content can react to footsteps or objects without extra camera or infrared hardware. The Costa Coffee pop-up used this to trigger animations as customers walked across it. The Selfridges floor ran pre-made content only, which is the simpler and cheaper option.

What pixel pitch does an LED floor need?

People look at a floor from standing height, so a coarser pitch than a wall works. The Selfridges stage used 2.5mm tiles because the artwork was detailed and the audience stood on it. For a large dance floor or a stage viewed from further back, the 3.9mm DIT tile keeps the cost down and adds brightness for a lit venue.
