Sustainable LED display procurement is the process of specifying, scoring and contracting an LED display on measured energy use, service life, repairability, end-of-life route and supplier ESG evidence, alongside capital cost. It replaces a single RoHS compliance line in a tender with a whole-life assessment of the product and the company supplying it.
That single line has grown into a section. Procurement teams in retail, corporate and public-sector organisations now ask for power draw at operating brightness, expected service life, spares availability and recycling routes before they will shortlist an LED video wall. The underlying question is practical: which display does the job for the least money and carbon over its life?

How much power does an LED display really use?

Datasheet maximum power is measured with every pixel at full white and full brightness. For procurement, ask each bidder for measured average power per square metre at your operating brightness with representative content, and the maximum rated figure separately for the electrical design. The two answer different questions and must not be swapped.
No indoor LED display runs at the datasheet maximum. Even a datasheet shows the gap: our DFC Series 1.5mm fixed-install cabinets are listed at 340 W/mยฒ maximum against a lower running figure of 180 W/mยฒ, and the sheet does not state the brightness or content behind the lower number. That is why we measure on site at the level the wall will actually run, and why a quoted average is only comparable when the brightness in nits, the content used and the measurement boundary come with it. Two design choices shift the number more than pixel pitch does. The first is driver architecture. Common-cathode driving supplies each colour of diode at its own voltage rather than one voltage for all three, which cuts wasted heat, so ask bidders whether the proposed modules use it. The second is processing. Novastar processing, with VNNOX for remote scheduling, lets you schedule brightness against ambient light, cap peak output and hold calibrated colour at lower drive levels. At commissioning we set the brightness schedule and the peak-output cap in the processor. Specify who owns that schedule after handover, because an energy estimate means little if anyone can leave the wall at full brightness indefinitely. How long should an LED display last?
Embodied carbon in an LED display sits in the cabinets, the PCBs, the diodes and the shipping. Only a longer service life recovers it.

Diodes are typically rated to around 100,000 hours before they reach half their original brightness, which is about 11 years of continuous running or more than 20 years at 12 hours a day. Power supplies and fans tend to fail sooner, so the useful procurement question is whether the wall can be repaired economically in year six. Questions that separate a long-lived LED video wall from a short-lived one:
- Are power supplies hot-swappable, and are they a standard part or a proprietary one?
- Can modules be replaced from the front? Rear access on a wall built into a reception desk usually means a joiner as well as an engineer.
- Will the supplier hold spare modules from the same production batch? A replacement from a different batch shows as a colour patch.
- What happens after our 3-year return-to-base warranty, in years four to ten, including labour and access equipment?
Longevity also cuts against over-specifying pitch. A 1.5mm wall in a space where nobody stands within a few metres is paying for resolution nobody sees. Separate supplier ESG policy from product evidence
A supplierโs environmental policy tells you how the company is run. It does not establish the embodied carbon, repairability or electricity consumption of the display in the bid. For the proposed LED display itself, ask what any environmental documentation covers: which equipment is in the bill of materials, what boundary and method sit behind any carbon figure, and whether anyone independent has checked it. The GHG Protocol Corporate Standard is the recognised framework for organisational accounting, and it says nothing about whether a particular display is sustainable. If product-level embodied-carbon data does not exist, record the gap.
What happens to an LED display at end of life?
LED displays are electrical and electronic equipment, which means the UK WEEE regulations apply at end of life. The underlying legislation is The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2013. A buyer can reasonably ask the supplier to confirm its producer registration and to state the take-back route in writing.
โRecyclableโ does not tell you who will dismantle the wall, collect it or document where it goes. Ask the supplier to define responsibility for de-rig, transport and treatment, and what records you will receive. Die-cast aluminium cabinets are recyclable as metal, and modules still within brightness spec can be refurbished for less demanding roles. Do not book a recycling saving you have not got in writing.
Whole-life cost: put it in the tender score
Whole-life cost for an LED display is purchase price plus installation, ten years of electricity at your operating brightness, planned maintenance, access costs and decommissioning. Score it beside the capital quote with every assumption visible.
ESG requirements get watered down at the purchase stage because the cheaper wall wins the budget meeting and its replacement date never appears on the same spreadsheet. A green procurement score puts the two on one page. Show repair costs as a range, because nobody knows them yet, and run the electricity price as a sensitivity. Set minimum viewing requirements first, so a display that cannot meet the brief does not recover its position through a low electricity estimate or a small carbon footprint.

I get asked about โthe carbon numberโ for a wall more often now than I get asked about the brightness. My position is that the biggest sustainability decision on most projects is one nobody puts in the tender: how long you plan to keep it. I have seen walls swapped out after four years because the original supplier could not source a matching module, not because the product had failed.
So when a buyer sends me an ESG questionnaire, the parts I take most seriously are the ones about spares, batch matching and service access. If a module fails above a reception desk, I want to know how it comes out, where the spare is stored and who can restore the configuration. If you make one change to your procurement process, write a ten-year serviceability requirement into it and hold the supplier to it. I would rather lose a job to a supplier who can meet that than win one on a cheaper cabinet that ends up in a skip.
