2.8 m LED Cube for the Mission 44 Reimagining the Future Event with Lewis Hamilton: Dynamo Case Study

Dynamo LED Displays built a 2.8 m LED cube as the centrepiece of Reimagining the Future, the Mission 44 charity event hosted by Lewis Hamilton. Set on one corner on a mirrored plinth, the cube played video and imagery about the young people Mission 44 supports across every visible face, with content mapped so it read as one object.

The brief: one object the whole room looks at

Mission 44 works to open up education and employment for young people from under-served communities in the UK. For Reimagining the Future the foundation wanted its guests to meet those young people through their own stories, not through a slide deck on a screen at the end of the room. Dynamo proposed a free-standing LED cube from its custom LED displays work: an object guests could walk around, with the stories playing on every side.

What Dynamo built

A 2.8 m cube balanced on its corner

The cube measures 2.8 m along each edge. Rather than sit flat on the floor it is mounted on one corner above a mirrored plinth, so the faces tilt towards the room and the mirror doubles the picture from below. A central support inside the plinth carries the weight, and the power and data for the LED run up through it, so there is no visible cabling.

Content mapped across every face

Each face of the cube is driven as part of one canvas, so a portrait can sit on one side while the headline for that story wraps onto the next. The content, produced for Mission 44, moved between photographs, video and typography on the event’s theme, including “An inclusive education system” and “A diverse teaching workforce”. Lewis Hamilton spoke beside the cube while a projected timeline of the foundation’s year ran on the walls behind.

What the audience said

Safa-Atiya Ahmed, a member of the Mission 44 Youth Advisory Board, said afterwards: “Thank you for creating such an incredible piece of artwork; it was amazing to see it come alive!” That is the test for a piece like this. The technology should disappear and the stories should be what people remember.

Current Dynamo options for an LED cube

An LED cube can be hired for one event or bought for a permanent installation. For hire, Dynamo builds cubes and other shapes from its DRE Series rental cabinets, which are 496 × 496 mm and lock together with corner pieces to give a clean edge. For a permanent build the same geometry is done with fixed-install modules. The figures below are from the DRE Series datasheet and the DIT Pro supplier specification; no prices are given here. See LED screen hire for how an event hire works and LED display products for the fixed-install range.

For curved or spherical pieces Dynamo uses flexible modules instead; the 1.5 m LED sphere hire for the UEFA headquarters showcase shows the same approach on a sphere.

LED cubes: frequently asked questions

What is an LED video cube?

An LED video cube is a free-standing display built from LED panels on four, five or six faces so it can be viewed from any side. The faces are driven as one canvas, so a single piece of content can wrap around the corners or each face can show something different. The Mission 44 cube is 2.8 m on each side and stands on one corner.

How big can an LED cube be?

Cube sizes are set by the panel module: a 496 mm rental cabinet gives edges of roughly 1 m, 1.5 m, 2 m, 2.5 m or 3 m, and 250 mm fixed-install modules give finer steps. Above about 3 m the weight and the rigging become the limit indoors, and the piece is usually built as an open tower or a four-sided column instead, like the 13 m tower at Muscat Grand Mall.

Can an LED cube be hired for a single event?

Yes. Dynamo builds event cubes from its DRE Series rental cabinets, delivers them with the base, processing and a technician, and removes everything after the event. Hire is priced for the size, the number of faces, the pixel pitch and the days on site, and content can be produced by the client or by Dynamo.

How is content mapped onto a cube?

The processor treats the faces as one large canvas, so the content is designed as a flat layout in which each region corresponds to a face. Elements can be placed to run across an edge, and the layout is tested on the built cube before the event so that type and faces line up. Video, stills and live feeds are all handled the same way.

How is an LED cube supported and powered?

A cube that stands flat sits on its own frame. A cube on its corner, as at Mission 44, is carried by a central steel support inside a plinth, with the LED cabinets locked around it and the power and data cables run up through the support. The plinth is sized and ballasted for the weight of the LED, and the whole piece is checked before guests arrive.
