27 LED Tickers in the Harrods Windows, Knightsbridge: Dynamo Case Study

Dynamo LED Displays installed 27 LED tickers in the Harrods windows along Brompton Road and Hans Crescent in Knightsbridge, London, over three nights in 2019. The 3mm tickers, mounted vertically on Brompton Road and horizontally on Hans Crescent, scroll the logos of the designers showing in each window 24 hours a day alongside white LED window lighting.

The brief: one moving line of light in every window

The Harrods design team had planned a window scheme built around white LED lighting and wanted a single moving element in each window: a slim strip scrolling the name of the designer on show, slowly enough to read from the pavement and discreet enough not to fight the merchandise. That is what an LED ticker does, and the same strip had to work standing on end in the tall Brompton Road windows and lying flat in the wider Hans Crescent ones.

What Dynamo installed

27 tickers, vertical and horizontal

Dynamo supplied 27 LED tickers at 3mm pixel pitch and fitted them to nearly every window along the two streets. On Brompton Road the tickers stand vertically, so the designer’s name reads up the side of the window; on Hans Crescent they run horizontally along the base or top of the display. The pitch was chosen for reading from the pavement a few metres away, where 3mm text looks solid while keeping the strip slim. Dynamo’s own logo was shown on the Brompton Road windows as part of the scheme.

Logos that scroll slowly, 24 hours a day

Each ticker scrolls the logo of the designer showing in that window, slowly, around the clock. Ticker content is simple to change, so a window re-dress means loading a new logo rather than printing new signage, and the scroll speed, colour and brightness are set per ticker so the strips match the white lighting rather than overpowering it. Our scrolling LED displays page covers the single-message tickers this scheme used.

Installed over three nights

Shop windows on Brompton Road cannot be out of action during the day, so the 27 tickers went in over three nights after closing. Each ticker needs a fixing, power and data, routed inside the window so that nothing is visible from the street. Yvonne McDonald, Dynamo’s operations director, said at the time: “I was really impressed with the design’s simple modern look and being a part of bringing it to life was extremely satisfying.” Dynamo later returned to Harrods for the Louis Vuitton x Kusama LED mirror and window screens.

Current Dynamo options for a shop window LED ticker

Dynamo builds LED tickers from 80 mm to 960 mm tall, with 94 mm and 250 mm the standard heights, and the LEDs are rated for 100,000 hours, which is why a ticker can run 24 hours a day. For a 250 mm ticker the current default is the DIT Pro P1.9, with the DX Series as the alternative. The figures below are per 1 m × 250 mm cabinet; DIT Pro figures are from the supplier specification and DX figures from the DX Series datasheet.

Model Pixel pitch Height Pixels per 1 m × 250 mm cabinet Brightness Suited to
DIT Pro P1.9 1.95mm 250 mm 512 × 128 px 600 nits Window tickers read at arm’s length, logos and small type
DX2.5 2.5mm 250 mm 400 × 100 px 800 nits or more Tickers read from the pavement
DX3.9 3.9mm 250 mm 256 × 64 px 800 nits or more Long runs read from across the street

LED tickers in shop windows: frequently asked questions

How many LED tickers are in the Harrods windows?

Dynamo installed 27 LED tickers across nearly all of the Harrods windows along Brompton Road and Hans Crescent in 2019. Each one scrolls the logo of the designer showing in that window, and they were fitted over three nights so that no window was out of action during trading hours. The tickers run at 3mm pixel pitch.

Can an LED ticker be mounted vertically?

Yes. The Brompton Road tickers at Harrods stand on end so the designer’s name reads up the side of the tall windows, while the Hans Crescent tickers lie horizontally. A ticker is a strip of LED modules, so the controller simply rotates the content; the fixing and the cable entry are planned for whichever orientation the window needs.

How long does it take to install LED tickers in shop windows?

The 27 Harrods tickers went in over three nights after the store closed. A single window ticker can be fitted in an evening. The time goes on routing power and data inside the window so nothing shows from the street, fixing the strip level or plumb, and loading and checking the content before the window is re-dressed in the morning.

What pixel pitch does a shop window LED ticker need?

Match it to how close people read it. The Harrods tickers are 3mm, read from the pavement a few metres back, where the text looks solid. A ticker shoppers stand right in front of suits 1.9mm to 2.5mm so logos and small type stay sharp; a long run read from across the street can use 3.9mm. Finer pitch adds pixels and cost without a visible gain at distance.

Can an LED ticker run 24 hours a day?

Yes. The Harrods tickers scroll around the clock. The LEDs Dynamo uses are rated for 100,000 hours, and brightness is scheduled so the strip is bright enough in daylight and dimmed at night to match the window lighting. Running continuously does not shorten the ticker’s life as long as the modules are ventilated and the brightness is managed.
