14 m × 10 m Curved Outdoor LED Billboard at Muscat Grand Mall, Oman: Dynamo Case Study

Dynamo LED Displays installed a 14 m × 10 m outdoor LED billboard at 20mm pixel pitch on the curved facade of Muscat Grand Mall in Oman, 10 m above a busy highway. Three Dynamo engineers completed the installation in five days using lightweight 7 kg/m² modules, and the screen is monitored and updated remotely over a fibre-optic control system.

The brief: a billboard that follows a curved facade

Muscat Grand Mall wanted an advertising screen on the outside of the building that drivers on the adjacent highway would see from a distance, and the only suitable wall was curved. A flat LED billboard would have stood proud of the stonework at both ends, so the screen had to be built to the radius of the facade and lifted into place more than 10 m up. Dynamo had already installed the 13 m LED tower and columns inside the mall, and the billboard followed as the second project on the site.

What Dynamo installed

A 14 m × 10 m screen at 20mm pitch

The billboard measures 14 m wide by 10 m high, a face of 140 m². At 20mm pixel pitch the picture is sharp from the highway and from the mall approach, which is the viewing distance the screen was specified for; a finer pitch would have added cost and weight without being visible from a moving car. The screen plays advertising and seasonal content for the mall, such as the Eid greeting in the photograph.

Lightweight modules for heat and height

The screen is built from bar-type outdoor LED modules weighing about 7 kg per square metre. The open construction lets air pass through the module, which is how it sheds heat in Oman’s summer, and the low weight meant the curved steelwork and the lifting equipment could be lighter than for a conventional cabinet screen of the same size. That is also why three engineers could complete the installation in five days.

Fibre-optic control with remote diagnostics

Data reaches the screen over a fibre-optic link with a second data path and redundant power, so a single fault does not take the billboard off air. The control system reports the health of every module back to Dynamo, content is scheduled remotely from anywhere, and proof-of-play logs record what was shown and when, which advertisers ask for before they book a slot. The LED display CMS page explains how remote scheduling and reporting work.

Current Dynamo options for an outdoor LED billboard

For a fixed outdoor billboard today Dynamo specifies the DVO Series or the DHB Series, both in 960 × 960 mm outdoor cabinets with front or rear service. DVO figures are from the DVO brochure and DHB figures from the DHB Series datasheet; no prices are given here. See outdoor LED displays for the range and the outdoor LED displays guide for brightness, IP ratings and structure.

Curved facades are handled with corner and curve cabinets in the DHB Series, which bends a 960 mm cabinet run around a building corner or a radius without a visible step.

Curved outdoor LED billboards: frequently asked questions

Can an outdoor LED billboard be curved?

Yes. The screen is built on steelwork cut to the radius of the facade and the modules or cabinets are set in small angular steps that read as a smooth curve from the viewing distance. At Muscat Grand Mall a 14 m × 10 m screen follows the curve of the building. Current Dynamo outdoor cabinets include curve and corner pieces for the same job.

What pixel pitch does a roadside LED billboard need?

Match the pitch to the distance of the nearest regular viewer. Drivers on a highway 30 m or more away cannot resolve pixels finer than about 10mm to 16mm, so a coarser pitch gives the same picture for less cost and weight. The Muscat screen uses 20mm; a billboard beside a pavement would use 6mm to 8mm.

How bright must an outdoor LED screen be in the Gulf?

Bright enough to read against direct sun on a light-coloured building, which in practice means 6,000 nits or more, with the brightness turned down automatically at night. Heat matters as much as brightness: modules and power supplies must shed heat in air temperatures that stay high after dark, which is why the Muscat screen uses open, lightweight modules.

How long does it take to install a large outdoor LED billboard?

The Muscat screen was installed by three Dynamo engineers in five days, with the steelwork and power already in place. Lightweight modules shorten the lift and the fixing time. Larger or higher screens, or screens that need a crane road closure, take longer, and the structural design and permissions are completed before the LED arrives on site.

Can a billboard in Oman be managed from the UK?

Yes. The Muscat billboard runs on a fibre-optic control system with remote diagnostics and remote content management, so Dynamo can see the health of every module and the mall can schedule content from anywhere. Proof-of-play logs show advertisers what ran and when. The site needs power and an internet connection; everything else is handled remotely.
