In 2018 we were able to see the first traces of MicroLED technology. It is currently developed by Samsung, Sony and a few Chinese companies with some insights that Apple is working on it as well. The biggest screen will be 146 inches in diameter and early indications are that there will also be modular LED offerings available. But, there are a few more things you should know regarding MicroLED.
Better visibility and enhanced brightness
The main advantages of MicroLED technology are improved brightness, perfect black hue and lack of visibility under angle issues with LCD technology. It is considered to be an upgrade compared to OLED, which was introduced back in 2008 by Sony. MicroLED is the first, major improvement in the last decade!
As we have mentioned, Samsung is working on this tech. They will start to ship massive TV with 146 inches in diameter in the summer of 2019 and it is believed that the smaller models will soon be available as well.
Besides Samsung, Sony and Apple are working on the same tech. Apple will use it on their smartwatches and probably smartphones. At the moment, the manufacturing is very complicated and very expensive, which is the main reason why MicroLED is still unavailable. This is also the main reasons why Apple stopped working on the technology a few years back.
The main problem with the manufacturing process
The main issue with the MicroLED is the almost impossible process to use it on smaller displays. Making large or massive screens is easy at the moment, but making usable and common size screens is still impossible.
Ordinary LED TV will have dozens of LEDs which will emit color. MicroLED will require 8 million of LED for each base color, meaning that an average TV with MicroLED technology will have 25 million LEDs. When the LEDs are shrined, they either have to get more electricity or they have to be more efficient in order to produce a sufficient amount of light. This is precisely the main problem engineers are facing at the moment.
The next issue that needs to be solved is the gap between the pixels. In MicroLED technology, it is incredibly small, which is another problem for engineers.
MicroLED technology is definitely the future. It offers better visibility brighter colors and it looks better, which is all what average users need and want. But, it is still unavailable and it won’t be ready for the next 2-5 years.
